3/13 - NCAA Indoor Championships

Coach K's Comments

Despite being sick with a stomach virus, Amy Spellmeyer didn't let it hamper her from achieving her goal of being an All-American. In a field of 18 vaulters, Amy entered the competition at 11' 9 3/4" (3.60m). She cleared on her first attempt with tons of room. At 12' 3 1/2" (3.75m) and after an hour of waiting, she cleared on her first attempt to keep pressure on the field. At 12' 9 1/2" (3.90m) only Amy and Erin Anderson of Kansas State were clean. However, Paula Serrano of Cal-Poly SLO and Tracy O'Hara of UCLA were just entering the competition. Amy stayed clean until 13' 1 1/2" (4.00m) where she nearly left the bar up on her second attempt. We were not able to conquer the 4.00m barrier, and that placed her 6th in the meet.

Amy finished the year as an NCAA All-American, Big Ten Indoor Champion, Big Ten All-Time Recordholder, Big Ten Meet Recordholder, Purdue School Recordholder, cleared over 12' 6" six times indoors, been over 12' 9 four times and 13' 1/2" twice. Not bad for someone what had an indoor p.b. of 11' 10" (cleared once) coming into the season. And to make it even more impressive - she did all of this running from only 80 feet of runway.

We look to move back an additional stride outdoors, and to get on some bigger poles. We are also anxious in getting to the NCAA outdoor meet in Durham, NC with a couple of her teammates.

Outdoor season starts for all the vaulters on March 24-25 in West Lafayette with the Purdue Open.

3/6 - USATF Indoor Championships

Coach K's Comments

It was awesome competition in Atlanta. Dragilia jumps a World Record and put some serious air on it. It would have been good at 15' 6". Amy was alittle nervous being out there head-to-head with Stacy, Mel Mueller, etc. She warmed up well, stayed focused and when the first bar went up (12' 3/4") and then went to work. She jumped clean til 13' 6" bar when she went out. Finished at the #2 College vaulter there behind NCAA Leader Tracy O'Hara. If she can do the exact same thing at Fayetteville, she will really like the results.

Until then, Plant High and Swing!

Coach K's Comments:

It was a weekend of celebration for the Purdue vaulters as we began our preparations for the Big Ten Championships. This was the first week of training that our primary focus was to REST. The main component in any training program. We wanted to some quality jumps at bars that we know we will have to look at the Big Tens. We did that, and as a result, I think we are peaking at the right time to make a good showing at the Championships.

Pooh Williams - getting much more confident on the 5m line of poles, and is just now learning how to get the most bang for his buck. Had 2 great looks at 17'3". He will vault in the open pv, as well as part of the heptathlon. Pooh pushed his PB to 16'6 3/4".

Jeff Gilbert - looked super through 16' 1", then began having some timing trouble at 16'6 3/4". He continues to make good progress, and I am look forward to his performance at Big Tens.

Scott & Derek - still working on some technical things and didn't leave up some solid bars. Derek is putting the pieces together, and if he will stay focused and patient, he will join the 16' club soon.

The Ladies!!! What can you say about their weekend. PR's were the flavor of the day for them.

Amy Spellmeyer: 13' 1/4"! Big Ten Record, Purdue Record, Olympic Trials Qualifier. She will look to win the Big Ten's before moving on the USA Indoor Champs, and then on the the NC's.

Katie Meyer: Getting better each week as she continues to focus on the top of her vault. PB's at 12'1. She should jump mid 12's very soon.

Simona Kovacic: upped her PB again with a clearance of 12'4"". Moved her to 20th on the NCAA list.

Ebby Metzinger: moved her PB to 12' 4". Tied her with Simona at 20th nationally.

Marianne Maj: got into the 10 ft. range for the first time in a big way with a clearance of 10'8". As she learns to relax, she will go higher outdoors.

Kelly Schulte: all she wanted to do was get a shot at a bar that would boost her PB over 10'6". She did that by leaving up 11'2". Had height on 11'8", but will leave it for another day.

Katie Rorem: I am so excited for Katie as she continues to work hard. The runup looked much better and is now getting on the poles that will allow her to get back over 12 feet and higher. She is my leader, and coaching assistant. Look for her big jumps to be here very soon.

The Big Ten is going to be heated. The Lady Boilers will go to Minnesota to defend the Championship ring that is now Purdue's. They will see stiff competition from Minnesota and Indiana's vaulters.

The men will have to be very consistent and very competitive to make the break through at the top of the Big Ten ranks. Michigan has two at 17', Illinois has an NCAA qualifier at 17'3", and then there is a pack from 16'4" to 16' 8". Misses will make a huge difference in this competition. Should be exciting.

Purdue to challenge women's pole vaulters

by Aaron Sharockman
Indiana Daily Student

Published February 10, 2000
Updated Thursday, 10-Feb-2000 01:01:17 EST

The IU women's track and field team was on quite a
streak.

Starting the first week of the season, the Hoosiers won the first three Big Ten Athletes of the Week. Junior Jen Brown twice, then sophomore Tia Trent carried the torch for coach Randy Heisler's team.

But their streak was broken following the Notre Dame dual meet Jan. 28.

The culprit was Purdue sophomore pole vaulter Amy Spellmeyer, who leads her Boilermaker team into Gladstein Fieldhouse this weekend looking to end two other streaks the Hoosiers have going -- a perfect record in the pole vault and IU's perfect 4-0 record.

"It's been fun to watch her," Purdue coach Ben Paolillo said. "She's a really great competitor and a fine athlete. She's going to be a good one."

She already is. Spellmeyer, who finished second at the Big Ten indoor meet last year, stole the Big Ten athlete award from the Hoosiers with a Purdue-record vault of 12 feet nine and a half inches in a dual meet Jan. 29 against Indiana State.

"We knew she was getting close to a big jump," coach David Kaiser said. "She is such a competitor that the higher heights were going to come. Thirteen feet is definitely a possibility for her this season."

But Spellmeyer is not the only problem facing IU vaulters seniors Cori McLeod and Angela McGregor. One would be a challenge for the Hoosiers, but the fact is Purdue boasts five of the top six vaulters in the Big Ten.

"They have five girls that can vault 12 feet," Heisler said. "It's going to be real tough for Cori and Angela. But this is their Big Ten meet. This is exactly the competition they are going to see in a couple weeks, so it's good."

Besides Spellmeyer, who is in the top-five nationally, and has already earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Boilers have a slew of other excellent vaulters.

Junior Katie Meyer placed fifth last season at the Big Ten Championships and has vaulted over 12 feet already this year. Canadian-born freshman Simoa Kovacic is already making a name for herself, vaulting over 12 feet just one month into the season.

If that isn't enough, Purdue also boasts freshman Elizabeth Metzinger and sophomore Katie Rorem, both of whom have season bests better than McGregor and McLeod.

"The women are making great strides," said Kaiser. "Last week, Amy opened at 12 feet, Simoa and Katie M. opened at 11 feet six and one-fourth inches and Katie Rorem opened at 11 feet. Everyone survived their opening bars, so we know that if we have to open high we can.

"The event started at something like 6 feet 6 inches so they learned to prepare and stay prepared for a long competition. It's definitely a good spring board for this week."

Kovacic, as a freshman, holds the 12th best vault in the country entering the weekend's meets.

If things couldn't have gotten any worse for the Hoosiers, Spellmeyer likes the facilities at Indiana and looks forward to jumping there.

McLeod and McGregor's best vaults of the year (11 feet five and three-fourths inches and 11 feet seven and three-fourths inches respectively) rank them behind all five of Purdue's big vaulters.

Minnesota's Christine Gullbrandsen is also ranked ahead of the IU vaulters.

So the seventh and eighth vaulters in the conference have a right to be scared as Purdue visits Bloomington Saturday. But like taking the pole the first time, this is a challenge they want.

"I'm excited for the Purdue meet," McGregor said.

"This is really a chance to make a big gain. It's going to be tough competition; I know that, but I think this could be a really big meet for us."

And Purdue, despite having the heavy advantage on paper, knows it can't take McGregor and McLeod for granted.

"Indiana has two fine vaulters and they're jumping at home," Paolillo said. "You never know. If they get going good, they might just win this thing. If you've been around the pole vault you know lots of strange things can happen. Our girls can't take anything for granted."

Wow, An article putting a positive spin on Purdue athletics in an Indiana student paper!!! I think I just heard the Devil turn his thermostat up a few degrees. The guy who wrote this article must have really done a lot of digging to find all that useful information, oh wait, he stol, um.... borrowed, it all from this site! What no citation? I think you can find half the article below and the other half from the Purdue offical site, PurdueSports. Good job buddy.

Coach K's Comments:

This was a weekend for the guys to continue their improvments to get ready for Big Ten's and will hopefully serve as a spring board for the Indiana vs. Purdue Dual meet this coming weekend.

Scott jumped solid once he got through some trouble at some lower bars. He is now "officially" a 16 footer. Jeff continues to get stronger on the runway as his confidence improves. Pooh - blew over 15' 9", but was coming off a tremendous training week so he lost his legs very quickly. I will rest him for the IU meet and see what happens.

The women continue to make great strides. The goal at Illinois was to not take alot of jumps, open high, and see what happens. Amy opened at 12', Simona and Katie M. opened at 11'6 1/4", and Katie Rorem at 11'. Everyone survived the event and their opening bars, so we know that if we have to open higher, we can. The event there started at something like 6' 6", so they also learned how to prepare, and stay prepared, for a long competition. Coach Brian Murer traveled with them to Champaign, and did a great job helping them get through it. Thanks Coach M.

Coach K's Comments.....

Well, I think the results speak for themselves. Amy has put herself into a tie for the #3 vault in the college ranks, and if she continues to develop her craft, she has the ability to score for the Boilers at the NC's.

Simona continues to take care of business, and just continues to get better each and every week. She has put herself into the #9 spot on the NCAA list by herself. I think that she may take a serious run at getting to the NC's also.

Katie Meyer is becoming more consistent at high bars.

Katie Rorem jumped with "somewhat" tired legs, and opened up at 11 feet. Higher than usual in an attempt to get her out of a comfort zone.

Ebby continues to impress me, even though we only work on her vaulting one day per week most of the time. Her jump of 11' 10" ups her personal best again (3rd or 4th time this season) and if the increments would have worked out right, would have made her the 5th Boiler on the NCAA qualifiers list.

Pooh Williams looked awesome. His clearance at 4.85m was a HUGE jump. He has consistently improved his run, and is beginning to move up big poles. Once we get a better read on where his standards need to be set, he is ready to jump 17' anyday. Maybe Feb.5th.

Jeff Gilbert looked solid also, but had a flat takeoff due to an injury that he sustained during the warmup.

Scott is starting to get back into the timing of this swing and rockback, but still needs to finish better.

Derek, new personal best for him. Derek is just a few weeks away from joining the others at the 16' + level. He is doing a good job off the ground, but we need to find some common ground in his approach.

I was disappointed in the sportsmanship shown from our counter-parts from ISU. This meet is a great competition, with alot of emotion involved. I believe that whether you are winning or losing, you conduct yourself with class and integrity. To bad not everyone displays that philosphy.

The summit was an experience of a life time for me, as well as the Boiler Vaulters. The group jumped fairly well from a technical aspect, but the bars just wouldn't stay up. We have been training hard in the past few weeks, so now we get a chance to rest for Indiana State this weekend.

Katie Meyer 3.65m Indoor Pr Looked very solid NCAA Prov. When we fix the top of her vault she will jump 4- 6 inches higher very quickly.

Simona Kovacic 3.65m Life PR Had some trouble with her approach due to the board runways, but did a real nice job once she left the ground. Do be surprised to see a 3.80m jump from her real soon.

Katie Rorem 11' 6" Look to start opening her at higher bars to create some urgency and aggressive in her jumps earlier. We still are working to get her to drive the bottom longer before she swings. Is becoming more consistent with her run - that is her key to success.

Amy Spellmeyer 11' 6" She is getting back on track. Run was alittle tentative due to confidence, and the boards. Still jumped alright from a technical standpoint. This was her breakout meet for the rest of the year. I feel sorry for ISU having to come to PUrdue, and catch her on her way back.

On the guys side, we saw some good things happen. We are now ready to start jumping at some good bars more consistently.

Derek McDaniel 15' 0" Made it look easy. Sprained his ankle during the warmup, so he lost some power in his run. Forced him to come up short at 15' 6"

Pooh Williams 16' 1" Made 15' and 16' feet look silly. At 16'4, reverted back to some bad habits, and had trouble getting the pole rotated to 60cm. Will clear 5.00m very soon.

Jeff Gilbert NH Had to open up at 16', and had trouble leaving it up. Got on top it, but just didn't finish the row and pull through release. He is jumping on 16' poles pretty well, now it is a matter of time.

It was a very positive experience for all of us at the Summit. We all learned alot, had alot of fun, and got a chance to rub shoulders with some of the best in the World. Can't wait till Indiana State gets to town.

Coach K's predictions for the meets this weekend - 1/12

I think that this will be a rough weekend for most as they are trying to still feel their way back down the runway. It is going to be our effort to us this meet in the same way that we did the intra-squad - come in early and jump at alot of bars. This is just getting us ready to do well at Reno next week.

Men's Intrasquad Results - 12/8/1999

Scott Koschka (SO) 15' 11" Looked very good till 16'4"

Jeff Gilbert (JR) 15' 11" Got on the 4.90 line last two jumps and is almost ready to be one of the 16' pole guys.

Pooh Williams (SO) 15' 5" Also did 4 other events at the same time. Had two jumps that were awesome.

Derek McDaniel (FR) 15' 5" Jumped indoor PR, and had moments where he really looked good.

Coach K's Comments:

Our goal was two fold - 1. be able to take a good number of jumps so that it ended up being a good workout; 2. to see how we looked at higher bars (not bunges) and to see what kind of adjustments me needed to make.

This group of 4 guys have worked ther butts off this fall in going back to the basics, getting stronger in the weight room, cardio strength, and have done a good job just breaking the vault down. We still need to become more consistent in the approach and takeoff as we move back to our full run. We could see some very solid bars this indoor season as long as they will stay focused on their training program over the holiday break.

Next Meet: January 15th, 2000

Coach K's Comments:

They all seemed to jump good bars, but they were not pretty! I guess that you don't get extra points for looks. Should give them boost of confidence as we go into the breaks and final exams.

The men's intra-squad is Dec. 8th.
